About DVD Decrypter

DVD Decryptor is an excellent freeware DVD ripping utility that also has the ability to read and copy DVDs to an ISO file, which can be burned onto DVD using DVD Decrypter's built in DVD writing feature.

Region and Macrovision (copy protection) are encoded onto VOB files. DVDDecrypter takes advantage of both the DeCSS Plus and VobDec algorithms for looking up and decrypting the CSS encryption during the ripping process. Once ripped this way, the files will play in any DVD player, and will not have Macrovision or region protection problems.

Congratulations you now have a DVD-Video backup that can be viewed with most modern stand-alone DVD players -- just remember that not all DVD players play these discs. Compatibility issues can be caused by the burning speed, the DVD player or by the DVD media. Should things go wrong try the process with some other DVD media -- the quality of the discs really makes a huge difference in DVD-Video use.

Similarly for the PlayStation games, you can do a backup of games DVD by following the above mention instructions. But, the backups will not be playable without modification. This is because all modern disc-based console gaming systems check the region code information on the DVD/CD with its own embedded code before it allows the game to start just to make sure you have inserted an original disc and any mismatch results in termination of the read process.

Modchips evade this digital rights protection by effectively routing around the security check so as to allow you to play imported games as well as backups of your own games made on CD-r or DVD-r Media. Many mod chips require some experience to install, especially since they require to be soldered, though recently, solderless mod chips have made headway.

PlayStation 2 modchips come in two types, a "swap" modchip and a "no-swap" modchip.

The idea used in swap type modchips is to let PS2 read the boot code from the original disc and then use the modchip to swap the disc out for a non-orginal. As PS2 does not realize the disc has been changed, the authentication code is never re-checked.

In case of no-swap modchips, a series of signals similar in nature that are present in an original CD or DVD disk is sent to the PS2 BIOS by the modchip. . This effectively allows any disc without the special authentication data to run. These modchips are usually more difficult to install into the console, requiring usually 19 to 24 wires to be soldered to the mainboard by the installer.
